Here’s a list of legumes that are common in Indonesia and are likely to be useful on Wetar.
Cowpea (Vigna sinensis) – 100 g of various kinds – worth getting, but check packets – we don’t want to import any weevils.
Dolichos lablab – 500g of seed required (various types available- we should have 200 g of each if we can get various kinds). Farmers do not appear to have any of this.
Lima bean – Phaseolus lunatus. Some farmers at Uhak have a black seeded variety. White seeded lines are worth trying – but probably best to get the climbing cultivar, not the bush cultivar- 200g.
Velvet Bean – Mucuna pruriens – the non-itchy velvet bean. 200g. Wetar farmers only know the itchy one – known locally as Kacang jahat.
